Program Details

Hydrogen Electrolysis Plants: Principles and Fundamentals from a Power System Perspective This course explores the global push for clean fuel, particularly green hydrogen, and its role in whole-energy system decarbonization. With large-scale hydrogen production on the rise, the grid integration of electrolyzers presents technical and economic challenges. This course covers these aspects, emphasizing the implications of integrating electrolysis plants into on-grid and off-grid systems. Participants will gain foundational knowledge of hydrogen electrolysis plants using both alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) technologies. The course dives into electrolysis stack models, power electronics interfaces (PEI), control systems, thermodynamics, hydrogen storage, and operational constraints for downstream applications—essential for system-level studies of electrolysis plants. The course further examines PEI and control strategies for grid integration, from small to large-scale electrolyzers. Participants will learn how electrolysis plants support system stability, renewable integration, and grid balancing, while tackling real-world operational challenges. Attendees will also receive an introduction to the techno-economic aspects of electrolysis plants, providing a comprehensive understanding of this advancing field. Upon completion, participants will be able to: - Understand the fundamentals of integrating hydrogen electrolysis plants within power networks; - Develop modeling skills for electrolysis technologies, including connection and dynamic studies; - Comprehend electrolyzer operation and grid connection requirements for both on-grid and off-grid scenarios; - Identify electrolysis plants' contributions to grid balancing, renewable curtailment, and frequency control; - Build essential knowledge in the basics of techno-economic analysis for hydrogen plants.
