Instructor: Dr. Sam Maleki Duration: 3.5 hours Advanced Training on Sub-Synchronous Oscillations (SSO), Sub-Synchronous Control Interaction (SSCI), Sub-Synchronous Ferro Resonance (SSFR), and Sub-Synchronous Resonance (SSR) This specialized course is designed for engineers with a minimum of 3 years of experience in power system studies and transient analysis. The course will cover advanced topics in sub-synchronous oscillations (SSO), sub-synchronous control interaction (SSCI), sub-synchronous ferro resonance (SSFR), and sub-synchronous resonance (SSR), focusing on both conventional power plants and inverter-based resources (IBR). Course Content (only covers part one of this training): Part 1 (Introduction to Sub-Synchronous Oscillations): • Fundamentals of Oscillatory Modes: Understand the differences between various oscillations in the power system. • SSR in Conventional Power Plants: Explore the phenomenon of sub-synchronous resonance in traditional power plants and its impact on system stability. • SSCI in IBR Facilities: Study the interaction between inverter-based resources and conventional power plants, and how this affects system dynamics. • SSFR and Transformer Saturation: Learn about the behavior of transformers under saturation conditions and the resulting effects on system resonance. Part 2 (Hands-on experience with PSCAD): • Network Conversion Requirements: Delve into the technical requirements for adapting the network to accommodate advanced control and protection systems. • Hands-on PSCAD Simulation: Gain practical experience simulating SSO, SSR, SSCI, and SSFR events using PSCAD, with a focus on transient analysis and stability studies. • SSO Damping Controllers: Learn about the implementation of damping controllers to mitigate sub-synchronous oscillations. • SSFR Protection Techniques: Understand the methods of protecting the network from the risks associated with sub-synchronous ferro resonance.
